- Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, disclosed that the state would unveil its 11 MW gas/solar-powered power plant within the next few weeks.
- Makinde promised to sign a bill establishing the State Electricity Regulatory Commission into law.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, disclosed that the state would be the first to achieve energy sufficiency in Nigeria. He stated this during his speech at the 20th anniversary of the British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN), held at the factory in Ibadan. Makinde said achieving energy sufficiency in the state had always been a major focus of his government and expressed his administration’s readiness to partner with BATN to achieve that.
The governor further disclosed that the state would unveil its 11 megawatts (MW) power plant within the next few weeks. Of the 11 MW, 10 MW is gas-driven, while the remaining one megawatt is solar-powered. Makinde promised to sign a bill establishing the State Electricity Regulatory Commission into law.
Speaking at the event, Makinde said, “You will be commissioning a 1.4 megawatt solar plant. This is pretty much in line with our aspiration in the state. For us, energy sufficiency is a big part of this administration. When I came in, there was no Energy Ministry, but we now have, and the Commissioner for the Ministry is here. Less than 3km from here, you have the City Gate for the gas coming into Ibadan. So, we should be able to work together to utilise Nigerian gas in this environment.”
