Pakistan’s Solar Use Surges as Trinasolar Leads in Perovskite Solar Patents

  • Pakistan boosted solar energy to 14% of total power in 2024, surpassing coal and becoming the third-largest energy source.
  • Trinasolar led global innovation with 481 patents in perovskite solar cell technology, advancing the future of high-efficiency, low-cost solar power.

Solar power generated over 14% of Pakistan’s total electricity in 2024, a dramatic increase from just 4% in 2021. This surge has positioned solar as the country’s third-largest energy source, surpassing coal. Experts shared these insights during a recent seminar highlighting Pakistan’s rapid shift toward green energy.

Speakers at the event noted that Pakistan now ranks as the sixth-largest solar market in the world, reflecting its fast-paced embrace of renewables. This progress, achieved despite ongoing energy and economic challenges, underscores Pakistan’s rising influence in the global clean energy movement.

In a related development, IPR Daily has named Trinasolar the world’s top company for patents in perovskite solar cell technology. The company has filed 481 international patents in this field, solidifying its leadership in what many see as the next breakthrough in solar energy.

Perovskite solar cells promise higher efficiency and lower costs than current silicon-based panels. In laboratory settings, these advanced cells have reached efficiency levels of up to 43%, although they are not commercially available. Still, Trinasolar’s advancements mark a crucial step toward making this technology viable for global markets.

In addition to its leadership in perovskite research, Trinasolar pioneered TOPCon solar cell technology, which is already in commercial use. The company ranks second globally for patents related to solar modules and TOPCon innovation.

Trinasolar collaborates with top institutions such as Fudan University in China and holds exclusive licences from Oxford PV in the UK and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. These partnerships further strengthen its role in accelerating solar innovation.

Chairman Gao Jifan reaffirmed the company’s commitment to clean energy research. “We will continue to support the global energy transition with better solar innovations,” he said, adding that Trinasolar plans to accelerate the market rollout of perovskite-silicon tandem technologies.
