- The Philippines begins tender to deploy 2GW of renewable energy capacity across three major power territories.
In a notice of auction by the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE), the country is seeking to install new capacity on the islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The target for the three regions is 1,400MW, 400MW and 200MW, respectively. It has begun a call for tender to deploy 2GW of renewables to this effect.
In terms of technology, the largest slot is open to solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in the three grid areas, and bids are to be accepted for a combined capacity of 1,260MW. In addition, some 380MW of proposals are awaited for wind power capacity in Luzon and Visayas, while 230MW will be allocated to biomass projects in the three grids. An additional 130MW is available for hydropower schemes in Luzon and Mindanao.
The tender is being held under the country’s Green Energy Auction Programme (GEAP), which aims to lift the share of renewable energy in the country’s power mix. The Philippines aims to reach a 35 per cent renewables share by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2040.
