County Durham of North East England has awarded planning permission to RES Group’s 99.9 MW Spennymoor battery energy storage project. The scheme was given the green light in line with the case officer’s recommendation.
The battery facility, which is planned to be located near an existing substation, will supply grid balancing services and increase access to low-cost green power once it becomes operational. The system will store electricity when power generation exceeds demand and release it in periods of high demand.
“Energy storage systems like the Spennymoor project are essential for a stable and secure electricity system; the resilience of which is crucial for the UK’s future energy security,” said Alan McMahon, Head of Energy Storage at RES.
The Spennymoor energy storage facility will be one of RES’s largest developments. It is part of the company’s over 700-MW portfolio of energy storage projects in development and construction in the UK and Ireland.
