- Plug Power to supply electrolyser for Egyptian green hydrogen production facility.
- The 100MW plant will produce green hydrogen, which will be used as feedstock for green ammonia production.
- The plant will be built and operated by Scatec, which will have a majority stake in the project.
US-based Plug Power has been selected to supply the electrolyser for the 100MW green hydrogen plant in Egypt. Norwegian clean energy developer Scatec will construct the plant. The hydrogen production plant will be sited in a location owned by Egyptian Basic Industries Corporation SAE (EBIC) in Ain Sokhna town. The plant is part of Scatec’s ‘Power to X’ strategic initiative, which aims to produce green hydrogen, which will be used as feedstock for green ammonia production. Scatec will hold a majority stake in the plant and implement the project alongside Fertiglobe plc, The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) and Egyptian construction contractor Orascom Construction.
Scatec will construct and operate the facility and sell its output to EBIC, a subsidiary of Fertiglobe, an ammonia producer owned by OCI NV and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). When completed, the 100MW Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyser will be the largest one globally. Scatec plans to complete the plant and being hydrogen production by November 2022.
