PHEDC recently sacked some workers
- Union threatens industrial action
- Demand payment of arrears
The Electricity Union has accused Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) of refusing to pay sacked workers their entitlements. The PHEDC had recently disengaged workers to the dismay of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies Union.
Innocent Douglas, the Assistant General Secretary of the Union has accused PHEDC of going against terms of agreements reached in respect of workers disengagement. He said, “In our conditions of service that we signed if you want to lay off a worker that has worked five years and above, you give him 50 or 40 per cent of his total emolument”.
Mr. Douglas further advised workers who were yet to receive the disengagement letters to reject them so long as they aren’t paid their entitlements. He warned, “If the management wants to give you a letter without your money, it becomes a labour issue”.
