Power Sector Losses Billions to Load Rejection

The General Manager, Market Operations, Transmission Company of Nigeria, Edmund Eje has accused Distribution Companies of load rejection. Eje made this known at the January edition of the Power Dialogue hosted by the Electricity Hub.

Data obtained from the Ministry of Power shows that the sector lost a total of ₦20.5bn was lost from the period of 1st – 22nd January 2021. The sector has continued to suffer from insufficient gas supply, distribution, and transmission infrastructure constraints resulting in the loss of 1,941MW.

Eje accused the DisCos of rejecting load thereby forcing the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to reduce the amount of energy evacuated on the grid. He said, “As the market gap started widening, the DisCos resorted to reducing their invoice monthly”. Speaking further on the impact of load rejection on the stability of the national grid  Eje said, “This means that we have capacity that cannot be utilised because of the ripple effect from the distribution end”.

The DisCos argue that TCN should be able to deliver power to economically viable locations within the distribution networks.

  1. In Eket, Akwa Ibom state, we are serviced by portharcourt electricity distribution company PHED,
they keep increasing the bills while the supply keeps going down, for the past 7 days we’ve only had 3hrs per day, huge decline from the 14 hrs per day.
Still we will be forced to pay the inflated bills or get disconnected.
How did we get here, and why are they allowed to move with policemen?
