GRIDCO to Restore Normal Power Supply to Kumasi by December

  • Several stakeholders have assured that the power supply challenges in Kumasi will soon be resolved.
  • The area has seen decreased energy supply following the damage done to the 330kV transmission line last month.
  • The Ministry of Energy has also announced measures to provide energy security to the northern and middle parts of the country.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO), Energy Ministry and the Volta River Authority (VRA) have stated that they are currently working to restore the power supply in Kumasi. In recent weeks, the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area has suffered from power supply challenges as a communications tower fell on the 330 kilovolts (kV) Aboadze-Kumasi Transmission line at Bogoso last November. This led to the collapse and damage of three transmission towers reducing power supplied to the middle and northern parts of the country. Instead, tAs a result, the Kumasi area has been supplied energy by the Akosombo Generating Station and the power generation enclaves in Tema. The Director in charge of Northern Networks of GRIDCO Vincent Boakye has stated that construction work on the damaged line is expected to finish by the 20th of December.
