Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has stated that the journey toward powering Nigeria’s educational institutions with clean and reliable energy continues to gain momentum. He noted that the Agency is nearing the completion of projects under the Energizing Education Programme (EEP) Phase III.

He highlighted the completion of the construction phase at the Federal University of Lokoja as a significant milestone in this journey.

The 1.7MW solar hybrid system, he noted, represents more than just infrastructure; it symbolises a strong commitment to powering learning, innovation, and opportunity.

In addition to the power plant, over 200 streetlights have been installed across the campus, covering a total road length of more than 6,550 meters.

The downstream distribution network has also been upgraded, while a world-class Renewable Energy Training Centre has been established to train at least 100 students annually.

Aliyu further emphasised the project’s transformative impact, noting that when the initiative began, the university had approximately 13,000 students—a figure that has now grown to over 30,000.

The project has also created more than 50 jobs within the campus vicinity, underscoring the wider socio-economic benefits of the EEP.

He extended special recognition to ZnShine PV-Tech Limited, the EPC contractor leading the project, and to all partners whose collaboration continues to make the vision of sustainable power for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions a reality.
