Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has followed up on the construction of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam in Tanzania. President Sisi was brought up to speed on the project during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and the ministers of housing and finance. Egyptian company El Sewedy Electric is implementing the project. President Sisi directed Egyptian officials in charge of regular visits to the project site in coordination with their Tanzanian counterparts.
The Julius Nyerere dam is the largest in East Africa and is expected to generate 5,920GWh of power annually. In addition, the dam will help control flooding and improve agriculture in the Lower Rufiji Valley area. The $2.9 billion hydropower project will be completed in 36 months and is fully financed by the Tanzanian government.
