- Nigeria continues its leadership in green finance with the ongoing third issuance of its Sovereign Green Bond.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on global investors to partner with Nigeria to fund the country’s green energy and sustainable development projects. On the second day of the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), Tinubu underscored Nigeria’s leadership in green project financing and reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for business growth.
“Nigeria became the first country in Africa to fund green projects through Sovereign Green Bonds, and we are now in the process of the third issuance. We invite global investors to join us in this venture. Our government is dedicated to providing the right conditions for businesses to flourish in Nigeria,” Tinubu said in a statement released by his Special Adviser for Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday, January 15, 2024.
During his speech, “From Climate Imperatives to Economic Prosperity: Bridging Africa with the Global Energy Future,” Tinubu emphasized the importance of global collaborations and advanced technology to address environmental challenges. He pointed out Nigeria’s vast agricultural potential and opportunities for technological advancements, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration in farming, as areas ripe for investment.
Nigeria’s leadership in green finance was also highlighted, with Tinubu reiterating the country’s commitment to tackling climate change through actionable policies like the Sovereign Green Bond initiative. This program, launched in 2017, made Nigeria the first African nation to issue sovereign-backed green bonds. The initiative raised funds for various environmentally sustainable projects, including renewable energy, waste management, and energy-efficient infrastructure.
The third issuance of the Sovereign Green Bond is already underway and aimed at supporting a broader range of green projects. Tinubu thanked His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, for hosting the ADSW and facilitating essential dialogues on global sustainability.
In closing, the president reiterated Nigeria’s potential as a key player in the green energy sector, urging global investors to seize the opportunity to invest in Nigeria’s green future.
