Protect the Environment!

Climate actions and moves to save the environment have become a global topic. The importance of tackling the effects of climate change cannot be overemphasised because it is a step forward to save the Earth from the ongoing damage caused by fossil fuel usage. Fossil fuels produce dangerous gases called greenhouse gases that deplete the ozone layer. The ozone layer is the protective barrier that shields the Earth from the sun. It absorbs the harmful ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun; without it, the Earth would be unsafe to live on.

The traditional method of electricity generation and cooking, burning fossil fuels such as coal, releases harmful greenhouse gases. In addition, burning waste and emissions from industries such as mining, transportation, and so on release these toxins into the environment. Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), destroy the ozone layer. This has led to climate change issues globally, evidenced by the recent flooding experienced in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

Consequently, it has pushed countries worldwide and the international community to call for global best practices in power, cooking, transportation, industrial, and oil and gas sectors. Most countries have set a net-zero emissions target by 2030 or 2060 to reduce carbon emissions. These countries have also drafted several pathways, plans and solutions to achieve this.

As the world celebrates the International Day for Protecting the Ozone Layer on September 16, it is vital to reiterate the importance of harnessing available, viable and sustainable solutions to protect the environment. Transitioning to clean, renewable energy sources to protect the ozone layer is achievable. In Nigeria, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are abundant. These sources cannot be diminished and are environmentally friendly, so there is an urgent need to harness these opportunities to provide energy access and create a sustainable environment for all.

Engaging in renewable energy initiatives has the potential to lessen dependence on fossil fuel energy sources, thereby establishing a connection to the pursuit of new frontiers in energy solutions. Nigeria’s energy trajectory could significantly benefit from a greater reliance on solar and wind power sources. In particular, wind power holds immense potential for transforming the country’s energy landscape. For the energy potential of these sources to be achieved, several initiatives between the public and private sectors, including enhancing public awareness, are needed.

Here are simple ways individuals can contribute to protecting the environment;

  • Avoid Burning waste. Dispose of waste through the proper authorities.
  • Use Clean cooking methods. Avoid using firewood; use electric stoves, biofuels and LNG-based cooking fuels instead.
  • Practice the three R’s. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle waste products, especially plastic materials.
  • Use products labelled ozone-friendly or toxic-free.
  • Use sunscreen to protect your skin from direct contact with UV light to prevent skin diseases like cancer and ageing.
