Protium Seeks Planning Permissions for Mega Hydrogen Plant

  • Protium is now seeking planning permissions to install a green hydrogen plant up to 17.5 MW capacity.
  • Electricity will be produced from 10 MW of renewable power plants.

Protium, a UK-based green hydrogen services provider, is now seeking planning permissions to install a green hydrogen plant with up to 17.5 MW capacity. The plant is planned to be installed at the site of a Welsh brewery owned by Budweiser Brewing Group UK & Ireland.

Public consultation has commenced towards presenting the project to the local community, and two events will be held in September, according to Protium. Magor Netzero expects electricity to be produced from 10 MW of renewable power plants located in the brewing group’s Magor Brewery facility in South Wales.

The energy from the project will be used to decarbonise various elements of the brewing process from 2027. A portion of the hydrogen output will go to fuel heavy goods vehicles and forklift trucks at the site.

The scheme, which is in the early stage of development, will be reviewed by the Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW).

The agency will then issue a decision on whether to make a recommendation to the Welsh Ministers. Budweiser’s parent is Belgian company Anheuser-Busch InBev, or AB InBev.
