Public Affairs Analyst Supports Nwoko’s Call for Government Takeover of Okpai Power Plant

  • Public affairs analyst Victory Oghene supports Senator Ned Nwoko’s call for the Delta State Government to manage the Okpai Power Plant to improve the electricity supply in the region.
  • Nwoko’s initiative aims to leverage the plant’s increased capacity of 980 megawatts, attract investments through Public-Private Partnerships, and ensure benefits for local communities.

Public affairs analyst Victory Oghene has expressed his support for Senator Ned Nwoko’s call for the Delta State Government to take charge of the Okpai Power Plant to improve the region’s electricity supply. The Okpai Power Plant in Ndokwa East Local Government Area recently expanded its capacity to 980 megawatts.

However, despite this increase, it has not sufficiently provided electricity to the surrounding host communities. Senator Nwoko, who represents Delta North, has urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure that the plant serves the state’s and its residents’ needs.

In a statement released on Friday, Oghene emphasised that effective management of the power plant could significantly alleviate the electricity challenges faced by the people of Delta. He noted that Nwoko’s call is particularly timely, given his ongoing efforts to collaborate with investors interested in engaging with the Delta Government through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to enhance power supply.

Oghene highlighted that Nwoko’s proposal aligns with implementing the Electricity Act 2023, which aims to attract additional investments and support independent power projects within the state. He stated that this legislative framework would create a conducive environment for private sector participation, ultimately improving residents’ electricity access.

Furthermore, Oghene pointed out that other experts share Nwoko’s views, asserting that intervention by the state government is essential to address the ongoing power crisis effectively. He referred to the Electricity Power Sector Reform Act of 2005, which entitles host communities to benefit from energy projects on their land.

This legal framework underscores the importance of ensuring that local communities reap the rewards of the resources located in their areas. Oghene reiterated Senator Nwoko’s position, calling the Delta State Government to prioritise local electricity management.

He underscored the potential benefits of leveraging the Okpai Power Plant to enhance the power supply for Deltans while simultaneously attracting local and foreign investments. By taking proactive steps to manage this critical energy resource, Oghene believes that the Delta State Government can make significant strides in improving the quality of life for its residents and promoting sustainable economic development.
