R.Power Expands Solar Footprint in Portugal

  • R.Power expands Portuguese portfolio with two new photovoltaic parks in Lagos and Portimão, adding 8.4 MWp capacity to generate 17 GWh annually.
  • The company now operates 10 solar parks in Portugal and plans to build an additional 100 MWp.

R.Power, a Polish solar energy developer, has strengthened its presence in Portugal by launching two photovoltaic parks in the Algarve municipalities of Lagos and Portimão. The parks’ combined capacity of 8.4 megawatts-peak (MWp) will add to the country’s renewable energy portfolio.

The new facilities will generate an estimated 17 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually to power thousands of homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions as Portugal advances its green energy transition.

R.Power identified Portugal as a strategic market for Iberian expansion, citing abundant sunshine, a favourable regulatory framework and growing demand for sustainable power. The company began accelerating operations in the country in 2024, commissioning plants in Tremês, Alhais, Elvas and Arada with a total capacity of 27 MWp.

The larger Lagos plant has an installed capacity of 6 MWp, features more than 9,000 solar panels over nine hectares, and is expected to produce 12 GWh annually. The Portimão site, at 2.4 MWp, comprises 4,000 panels across six hectares and delivers around 5 GWh annually.

Both parks use solar tracking systems to follow the sun’s movement, optimising panel alignment and boosting energy output. R.Power said the technology demonstrates its commitment to deploying innovative solutions across international projects.

With the new additions, the company operates 10 connected solar parks in Portugal. It plans to install another 100 MWp in the coming years as part of a broader strategy to expand its Iberian portfolio.

R.power said the Algarve projects also highlight the region’s potential as a hub for sustainable infrastructure, signalling growing international confidence in its role beyond tourism.

Portugal has emerged as one of Europe’s renewable energy leaders, aiming to achieve decarbonisation and energy independence targets through public and private investment. R.Power’s expansion in the Algarve underlines how foreign partnerships can create local benefits, including emission cuts, job creation and greater resilience in the national energy system.
