- Global race for sustainable aviation fuel intensifies.
- Airlines announce projects to increase SAF blending.
The global race for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is intensifying, as noted by the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) during its recent webinar titled “Putting a Price on Sustainable Aviation Fuel.” Jordan Godwin, OPIS’s Biofuels Director, highlighted the prevalence of promises in the SAF sector.
Airlines have announced numerous projects and commitments to blend more SAF into their fuel supply. However, tangible progress still needs to be improved. Godwin emphasised the significant cost difference between producing SAF and traditional jet fuel.
He stressed the industry’s need for tax credits to level the economic playing field. One potential solution discussed is the introduction of certificates allowing consumers to offset their carbon footprint when purchasing airline tickets voluntarily.
Experts anticipate the Biden administration will release a preliminary climate model for its sustainable aviation fuel subsidy program in the coming weeks.
