- REA and EM-ONE sign MoU to deploy 350 MW renewable energy projects in Nigeria.
- The partnership supports Nigeria’s carbon neutrality goal by 2060.
- The $750 million investment from the World Bank’s DARES Project will boost renewable energy projects.
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and EM-ONE Energy Solutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deploy 350 megawatts of renewable energy projects across Nigeria.
This agreement, formalised at the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) Energy Access Investment Forum 2024 in Lagos, supports Nigeria’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2060.
The World Bank’s DARES Project invested $750 million in this initiative, which REA manages. EM-ONE will lead projects in interconnected mini-grids (IMGs), healthcare electrification, e-mobility, smart grids, virtual power plants (VPPs), and capacity building.
Key components include interconnected mini-grids, innovative grid technologies, and VPPs, which are vital for modernising Nigeria’s grid. These mini-grids will link distributed energy resources (DREs), providing a cost-effective solution for energy access. Smart grids and VPPs will improve grid visibility, optimise power flows, and scale up renewable energy integration.
EM-ONE will deploy 200 MW of renewable energy at commercial and industrial sites and 150 MW for healthcare electrification. The partnership will also promote electric vehicle adoption through demonstrations and pilot projects, enhancing local capacity in renewable energy.
REA CEO Abba Abubakar Aliyu and EM-ONE Director of Sustainable Energy Adnan Rashid signed the MoU. Aliyu highlighted the collaboration’s potential to provide clean energy to underserved communities and advance carbon neutrality goals.
EM-ONE CEO Mir Islam emphasised the partnership’s role in advancing Nigeria’s renewable energy sector. With EM-ONE’s expertise and REA’s vision, the alliance will impact Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.
EM-ONE joins the Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs) initiative under REA, aiming to support utility-scale projects and complement Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
The REA-EM-ONE partnership demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to a sustainable energy future, marking a new era of progress in the power sector.
