- The first phase of the PUE programme.
- This programme aims to increase productive energy use in rural mini-grid communities across the country.
- Five mini-grid developers have qualified for the first phase of the programme.
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has signed contract agreements for the commencement of the first phase of the Productive Use Appliances & Equipment (PUE) programme under Component II of the African Development Bank (AfDB) – Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP). This Component aims to increase productive energy use in rural mini-grid communities via increased access to efficient, electric productive equipment. Under the programme, 24,500 MSMEs will have improved access to energy services from effective use systems such as fans, fridges/freezers, grinding machines and other equipment and appliances.
The REA signed agreements with five mini-grid developers including, Messrs Leading Diagonal Engineering Ltd, Nayo Tropical Technology Limited, PowerGen Renewable Energy, Zylab Technologies Nig. Limited and GVE Projects Ltd. These developers have scaled the qualification stage and currently have operational rural mini-grids that will test different PUE provision models in Nigeria.
REA’s MD/CEO, Engr. Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad called on developers to incorporate productive use appliances a more significant part of their overall strategy and business model for mini-grid viability and also ensure the provision of standardized energy-efficient appliances & equipment.
