- Through this partnership, REAN and GWEC, through NWEC, will be collaborating to research, promote, advocate and develop wind energy projects in Nigeria.
- This collaboration targets integrating wind energy into Nigeria’s energy mix.
The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Wind Energy Council (NWEC). NWEC is the Nigerian arm of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). This partnership aims to deliver on Nigeria’s just energy transition goals.
According to REAN, this state-of-the-art collaboration marks a significant step forward in integrating wind energy into Nigeria’s energy mix. Through this partnership, REAN and GWEC, through NWEC, will be collaborating to research, promote, advocate and develop wind energy projects in Nigeria.
“Together, we’ll transform wind into a powerful force for economic growth, sustainable development, job creation and a just energy future for Nigeria,” said REAN.
At COP28, the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) signed an agreement with GWEC and the Niger State Government on wind energy development. This agreement seeks to develop wind energy projects in Nigeria’s largest state by land mass.
Bridge Synergy, an international consultancy firm facilitated the agreement which is for five years and may extend for another five years upon re-negotiation by all the parties.
According to research, the rising population and industrialisation has driven energy demand which has pushed the limits for Nigeria to critically examine sites suitable for wind energy harvest.
Currently, Nigeria does not produce a relatively large amount of wind energy. The country’s only major wind project, the 10MW Katsina wind farm, has been an abject failure, having been in the pipeline since 2005. The project still has not reached completion, suffering several setbacks and a chronic lack of funding.
