ReNew Launches $2.5bn Renewable Energy Project in India

  • ReNew Energy launched a $2.5 billion hybrid renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh, combining 1.8GWp of solar, 1GW of wind, and a 2GWh battery storage system.
  • The company finalised PPAs for the first phase and committed to using domestic solar panels, creating 1,500 jobs and supporting India’s 2030 non-fossil fuel target.

ReNew Energy Global has announced a ₹220 billion (US$2.5 billion) investment in a flagship hybrid renewable energy project in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. The company expects the facility to reach a combined generation capacity of roughly 2.8 gigawatts (GW), making it one of India’s largest single-site clean-energy complexes.

ReNew will deploy 1.8 GW peak solar panels alongside 1 GW of wind turbines and integrate a 2 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). The first phase will bring online 587 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar capacity, 250 MW of wind capacity and a 415 megawatt-hour battery bank, all underpinned by power-purchase agreements the company has already finalised.

Government and company leaders joined the ground-breaking ceremony: Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Information Technology, Nara Lokesh, and ReNew’s founder, chairman and chief executive, Sumant Sinha, sank the first ceremonial spade into the site. Lokesh emphasised that the project “aligns fully with Andhra Pradesh’s integrated clean-energy policy and advances India’s 500 GW non-fossil-fuel target by 2030.”

Under the Make in India initiative, ReNew will source all solar panels from its domestic factories in Jaipur and Dholera. The company will fit solar arrays with tracking systems to optimise sun exposure and employ waterless robotic cleaning to boost performance while conserving local water resources.

Meanwhile, ReNew currently operates 717 MW of wind farms and 60 MW of solar capacity across ten locations in Andhra Pradesh. The new hybrid complex will create around 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, strengthening local economic development and supporting the state’s ambitious renewables agenda.

Minister Lokesh noted that the project “builds not just capacity but credibility and global investor confidence,” signalling Andhra Pradesh’s emergence as a national leader in clean energy.

Furthermore, Sumant Sinha praised the state’s “investor-friendly policies, robust transmission infrastructure and abundant solar and wind resources,” and expressed optimism about scaling up: “We see significant opportunity here to help India reach its 2030 non-fossil-fuel goal.”

ReNew designed the BESS to supply up to four hours of power during daily peak-demand periods, bolstering grid stability and offering firm renewable output. Pending financing and grid approvals, the company plans further capacity additions in subsequent phases.

ReNew’s hybrid project underscores its commitment to large-scale decarbonisation and reinforces India’s trajectory towards a low-carbon energy future.
