The newly appointed Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, has proposed a full-fledged ministry for the renewable energy sector. According to him, carving out a ministry for renewable energy will give the sector the appropriate attention to explore alternative energy sources and drive investment in emerging technologies that would ensure a significant contribution to Nigeria’s energy supply from that sector.
In a statement addressing the 10th assembly, Ogene said, “Scientists and experts have predicted that we will deplete the Earth’s fossil fuel reserves in as few as 50 years, so, investing now in renewable energy is one way to ensure a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.”
He stressed the importance of the nation’s investment in the renewable energy sector and technologies, especially with diminishing global fossil fuel reserves and increasing environmental impact and climate change.
Declaring confidently that the committee would formulate vital policies to redirect Nigeria’s energy needs away from the dwindling fossil energy to more sustainable and cleaner renewable energy, Ogene stated that the committee would find a lasting solution to Nigeria’s intricate electricity power challenges.
