Renewable Energy Meet 68.8% of Portugal’s Energy Needs in H1 2021

 

  • Hydro and wind met 56 per cent of Portugal’s energy needs in the first 7 months of the year.
  • Monthly solar energy production crosses 200GWh

Clean energy sources produced 66 per cent of Portugal’s electricity consumption in the first seven months of the year. According to data from power utility Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN),  hydro and wind produced about 30 and 26 per cent of demand respectively. Biomass provided 7 per cent while solar PV met 3.3 per cent of energy needs. The data also showed that for the first time ever, solar energy production crossed the 200GWh threshold monthly.

For non-renewable sources, natural gas produced 28 per cent of the energy needs while coal met 2 per cent. In July, clean energy generation supplied 52 per cent of domestic consumption with non-renewable sources and imports providing the remaining e remaining 34% and 14%, respectively.
