Renewable Energy to Power Morocco’s High-Speed Rail

  • Al Boraq train to operate on clean energy.
  • Measure set to aid the avoidance of 120,00 tons of carbon emissions.

The 323km Al Boraq high-speed rail service between Casablanca and Tangier in the Kingdom of Morocco has begun using green energy, according to a statement from the National Railways Office (ONCF). The statement notes that from January 2022, the national operator ONCF has provided clean energy for the national railway network. The ONCF is progressively adopting clean energy in its operations. Currently, the railway operator is meeting 52 per cent of its energy needs with clean energy, with plans to increase to 50 per cent in 2023.

According to the ONCF, this transition will improve its carbon footprint by avoiding about 120,000 tons of carbon emissions annually. This transition is part of the Kingdom’s national energy strategy, which aims to increase clean energy contribution to the energy mix. Morocco plans for 52 per cent of its installed energy capacity to be clean energy sources by 2030.
