- UK government funds £60 million in financing to 28 hydrogen projects
- The projects might help the UK achieve its 10 GW of hydrogen capacity by 2030
The UK government announced that the Low Carbon Hydrogen Supply 2 (HySupply 2) competition has granted up to £60 million in financing to 28 hydrogen projects around the country.
The money will go toward research and development in hydrogen generation and transportation and advancing the hydrogen sector in the United Kingdom. The projects might help the UK achieve its 10 GW of hydrogen capacity by 2030 in its current energy security strategy.
“The British Energy Security Strategy makes it plain that we support hydrogen as an emerging industry of the future in which the UK can lead the globe,” said Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.
The UK government gave out two types of funding; stream 2 allocated £38 million to five projects to support the demonstration of new hydrogen supply options. ITM Power, for example, will be receiving around £9.3 million to construct a next-generation 5-MW electrolyser stack.
Stream 1 funds will be distributed in two stages. In the first phase, 23 projects will receive approximately £6 million to conduct feasibility studies on innovative hydrogen supply systems. Cadent Gas Ltd, for example, has been awarded £296,174 to research purifying hydrogen transported through the gas system for use in automobiles.
