- Repsol launched a renewable fuels facility in Cartagena, Spain.
- Produces 100 per cent renewable fuels from organic waste.
Repsol achieved a milestone in decarbonising transport with the launch of a renewable fuels facility in Cartagena, Spain. It is the first in the region to produce 100 per cent renewable fuels.
The facility, which has an investment of €250 million and a capacity of 250,000 tons per year, produces renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel for various transport modes. It is derived from organic waste, such as cooking oil, for cost-effective decarbonisation.
It is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 900,000 tons annually, with 90% lower net emissions than mineral fuels. Juan Abascal, Repsol’s executive managing director, hails the project as a significant step towards decarbonisation.
The facility prioritises processing 300,000 tonnes of organic waste yearly, including used cooking oil. It is certified under ISCC-EU and the Spanish National Sustainability Verification System for adherence to Renewable Energy Directive standards.
