RMI Launches Global Women in Clean Energy Fellowship

  • Global Women in Clean Energy Fellowship empowers 50 African women to lead the energy transition.
  • Indonesia prepares to launch its Global Women in Clean Energy Fellowship this November.

The Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) has launched the Global Women in Clean Energy (GWiCE) Fellowship under the Energy Transition Academy. The initiative focuses on building women’s technical and leadership skills in solar PV, hydropower, storage, and other distributed energy systems.

The African cohort began in July 2025 and will run until December. It includes 50 women from Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Zambia. Together, they represent over 45 government, engineering, project management, NGOs, and business development organisations. Meanwhile, the Indonesian cohort will start in November 2025 and continue until May 2026, addressing the country’s clean energy priorities.

Notably, the programme addresses skill gaps identified in RMI’s needs assessment. It offers technical training, group mentorship, peer networking, capstone projects, and leadership sessions. As a result, participants gain the tools to step into leadership roles and shape the energy transition.

In addition, the fellowship benefits from strong partnerships. Collaborators include the Ethiopian Women in Energy Association (EWiEn), Lagos Energy Academy, GWNET, and Zambia’s Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre. In Nigeria, RMI highlighted that meeting energy targets — such as 30 GW of grid-connected power by 2030, with 30 per cent from renewables — depends on rapid workforce development.

The fellowship concludes with the GWiCE Leadership Accelerator, an in-person strategy, communication, and stakeholder engagement workshop. Likewise, Indonesia’s programme will follow the same format, though tailored to its transition agenda.

Ultimately, the Global Women in Clean Energy Fellowship aims to empower women, strengthen leadership, and accelerate the shift to sustainable power in Africa and Southeast Asia.
