Rosatom’s New Partnership Aims to Revolutionize Water Purification

  • In Morocco, Water and Energy Solutions has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Russian energy company Rosatom.

In the second Russia-Africa Summit, which took place in St Petersburg and ended on 28th July 2023, Moroccan companies got the opportunity to form new partnerships, particularly in the water sector. One such company is Water and Energy Solutions from Morocco, which will be collaborating with the Russian energy company Rosatom. They will work together to implement new projects for desalination and water purification in Morocco.

The agreement was signed on 27th July by the Chairman of Water and Energy Solutions, Mohammed Amine Cherkaoui, and the Managing Director of Rusatom Smart Utilities, Kseniya Sukhotina. Water And Energy Solutions is aiming to use advanced technologies to improve water supplies in Morocco, and Rosatom has gained significant experience in building desalination and water treatment units for both industries and households. Rosatom, through its JSC Science and Innovations, has developed mobile water treatment units called Umkwa. These units use advanced technologies like ultraviolet (UV) disinfection and reverse osmosis to treat water and meet the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards. They can treat 1,000 litres of water per day and are powered by petrol and solar energy.

Implementing these technologies in Morocco will help address water scarcity caused by drought. The Moroccan government aims to increase the kingdom’s water production from desalination to at least 1 billion m3 by 2030 for various uses such as drinking, irrigation, and other purposes. Currently, each Moroccan only has access to about 500 m3 of fresh water annually, compared to 2,500 m3 in 1960. Support the implementation of several water projects in the Kingdom of Morocco.
