Russian Attacks Cause Widespread Power Outages Across Ukraine

  • Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have caused widespread power outages in cities, including Kyiv and Dnipro.
  • Ukraine’s national energy company has implemented emergency power cuts to stabilise the grid after the attacks while authorities assess the extensive damage to the energy sector.

Russian forces launched a series of drone and missile attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight, resulting in significant disruptions to power supplies and fatalities. The attacks, which affected almost all regions of Ukraine, have led to power outages in several cities, including Kyiv and Dnipro.

According to Ukraine’s air force, the assault involved dozens of missiles and drones aimed at energy facilities across the country. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal described the attacks as a “massive Russian assault” targeting critical energy infrastructure. He stated that at least 15 regions were impacted by the strikes, underscoring the widespread nature of the disruption.

In response, Ukraine’s national energy company, Ukrenergo, has implemented emergency power cuts to stabilise the grid. This measure aims to mitigate the impact of the attacks and prevent a total collapse of the power system.

Power outages have been reported in several cities, including the capital, Kyiv and the industrial city of Dnipro. Serhii Kovalenko, CEO of Yasno Energy Company, confirmed that these outages were a direct result of the recent attacks.

Ukraine’s Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko is still assessing the extent of the damage to the energy infrastructure, noting that “the energy sector is in the crosshairs” of the ongoing conflict. The energy disruptions come just days after a separate Russian strike on a hotel in the Donetsk region, which resulted in the death of a British safety adviser and injuries to two journalists.

The latest wave of attacks highlights the vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict. It underscores the country’s challenges in maintaining power supplies during heightened aggression.
