- President Kagame Appoints seven-man Board
- Rwanda plans to develop its renewable energy sector
President Paul Kagame has appointed the seven-man Board of Rwanda Atomic Energy Board(RAEB). Rwanda plans to construct a nuclear power plant to bridge the electricity supply gap in the country. In addition, the Rwandan government signed an agreement with the Russian nuclear agency Rosatom Global on developing nuclear power in Rwanda. Among the appointed Board members are Lassina Zerbo, the Board Chairperson, and Princess Sumaya bint Hassan, a renowned Jordanian scientist.
The Chief Executive Officer RAEB, Fidele Ndahayo, said, “We plan to sign the contract for the feasibility studies by the end of this year, preferably by November. One for the centre will last for eight to nine months, then the nuclear power plant feasibility study will follow using some elements of the information that will have been gathered,”
“The studies will determine when we start, where the facilities will be located, and cost estimates,” Ndahayo added.
Ndahayo stated that Rwanda would work closely with International Atomic Energy in developing its nuclear sector, adding that the country has chosen to adopt the Small Modular Reactors technology for safety reasons.
