Rwanda says it is set to meet energy targets.
- It has three years to meet the 100% energy access target
- Currently at 63% access rate
Rwanda’s Finance and Economic Planning Minister, Uzziel Ndagijimana, has said the country is set to meet its target of 1000% access to electricity in 2024. The Minister made this known while addressing reporters at signing the $84.2 million funding facility with the African Development Bank (AfDB). The AfDB facility will improve electricity access to Gisagara, Huye, Nyamagabe, Nyanza, Nyaruguru and Ruhango districts.
“We are on track to achieve the target. We have brought together all development partners supporting energy program for harmonisation and put together all resources for energy which are now over $670 million”, Ndagijimana said. “All these will accelerate energy access. We have also off-grid solutions such as solar home solutions that have to be scaled up to people who are very far in rural areas”, he added.
Rwanda currently has a 63% electricity access rate as of May 2021; this represents a 26% increase from three years ago.
