- RWE Renewables has commenced the development of its first green hydrogen project in Chile
- The project will be developed alongside about 1 GW of wind farms
RWE Renewables, a subsidiary of the German company RWE AG has commenced the development of its first green hydrogen project in Chile. The company plans to install about 835 MW of electrolysis capacity, according to a press release by the company.
The project, dubbed Vientos Magallanicos also known as Winds of Magallanes, will be developed alongside about 1 GW of wind farms which will be sued to power the electrolysers. The company’s goal for the project is the production of about 475,000 tonnes of ammonia every year, to be exported to international markets.
The project is located in the Laguna Blanca community in Magallanes, Southern Chile. RWE revealed that its choice of locating the project in Magallenes was made after conducting a “business screening” across the entire country in 2020 in search of suitable locations for green hydrogen development.
In 2021, RWE developed a pre-feasibility study of a prototype to understand the entire value chain of this type of project in the Magallanes region.
The Vientos Magallanicos project is in the very first stages of development. RWE says it is in contact with the regional authorities and the Laguna Blanca mayor and will soon start approaching the local communities.
The company expects the facilities to start operations after 2030.
On top of Vientos Magallanicos, RWE Renewables has a portfolio of 2.8 GW of wind and solar projects to develop in Chile, Alfredo Zanartu Stambuk, country manager for the company, was quoted as saying.
