- It has secured a joint venture, Bight Wind LLC.
RWE Renewables will be developing its first offshore wind project in the US after winning the largest lease area in the New York Bight auction with a bid of USD 1.1 billion (EUR 983m).
According to RWE renewables, the land for the project spans 124,964 acres and was secured through its joint venture, Bight Wind LLC. The area has the potential to host 3GW of capacity.
The company noted that the winning bid allows it to develop the lease area and to take part in upcoming offtake auctions in New York state, the first of which is planned for later in 2022. RWE will now seek to begin community outreach with local tribes, the fishing industry, and other ocean users, engage with the local supply chain, and enter into project labour agreements. The company expects to have the wind farm up and running toward the decade’s end.
The New York Bight offshore wind lease auction lasted 64 rounds across three days, attracting bids from 14 different parties. It resulted in competitive winning bids from six companies totalling USD 4.37 billion.
