- RWE AG buys up to 900MW wind project.
- The offshore wind farm will have a power generation capacity between 600 MW and 900 MW.
According to German energy giant RWE AG, the company building an offshore wind farm project that could add up to 900 MW of power in Irish waters has been bought.
The German group’s offshore wind development business in Ireland is expected to “substantially” grow due to the acquisition of project development vehicle Western Power Offshore Developments Ltd, adding to its already extensive portfolio of renewable energy sources. The transaction’s financial specifics were kept private.
A public consultation will take place on the East Celtic Wind Farm next year, which is still in its very early phases of development. The final turbine locations and cable routes have not yet been decided, although installation is anticipated to take place about 10 kilometres off the coasts of Wexford and Waterford.
“East Celtic is targeting inclusion in Ireland’s offshore Phase 2 round and could be invaluable in contributing to the Irish Government’s 80% renewable energy target by 2030,” said Sven Utermohlen, CEO of Wind Offshore of RWE Renewables.
In Ireland, RWE is developing the Dublin Array wind farm off the coast of Dublin and Wicklow together with its partner Saorgus Energy. The offshore wind farm will have a power generation capacity between 600 MW and 900 MW.
Earlier this year, RWE’s renewable energy arm pledged to invest up to € 1.5 billion in green power projects in Ireland by 2030 as part of a global €50-billion investment plan.
