SA Energy Trader Places Order for Mega Energy Storage Project

  • The project marks SA’s largest battery energy storage system to be installed.

Earth & Wire Ltd, a South African renewable energy trader, has made an order for the supply of batteries with Ambri Inc. The order concerns the 300 MW/1,200 MWh energy storage project at a hybrid wind and solar power site in the Eastern Cape.

Ambri, based in Massachusetts, revealed in a statement that this is not only the company’s largest commercial deployment to date but also the largest battery energy storage system to be installed in South Africa.

According to Ambri, the batteries will help Earth & Wire manage fluctuations in supply and demand. Expectations are that shipments will start in 2024 and complete installation in 2026.

“As South Africa works to address its current energy challenges, this partnership – and our technology more broadly – will help Earth & Wire and other renewable energy providers solve long-standing operational challenges and stabilize their nation’s energy grids,” commented Adam Briggs, Chief Commercial Officer at Ambri.
