- Under the RESPITE program, Togo initiated a solar power plant project in the Savanes region.
- International call for tenders overseen by Respite Project Regional Coordination Unit.
Togo launches a photovoltaic solar power plant project in Dapaong, part of the Savanes region, under the Regional Urgent Intervention Project in the Solar Energy Sector (RESPITE). The endeavour prompts an international call for tenders overseen by the Respite Project Regional Coordination Unit (URC) in Monrovia, Liberia.
The aim is to establish a 25 MWp solar power plant, complemented by a 40 MWh battery electricity storage system. Interested companies must handle design, supply, and installation within twelve to sixteen months.
Expressions of interest close on June 4, 2024. The selected company will provide electricity to over 60 localities in the Savanes region. The project receives $60 million in funding from the International Development Association (IDA), a branch of the World Bank Group.
This initiative forms part of the broader Regional Solar Emergency Response Project (RESPITE) that received $311 million in funding from the World Bank in 2023. RESPITE also includes Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Chad. It aims to harness 106 MWp of solar photovoltaic energy alongside battery-based storage systems.
Additionally, the project seeks to enhance hydroelectric capacity by 41 MW and improve electricity distribution and transmission across the participating nations. The call for tenders in Togo marks a pivotal moment in RESPITE’s implementation. It heralds a shift towards sustainable energy solutions in the region.
