- SEFA to expand renewable energy reach in Africa with $64M funding.
- GEAPP collaborates with the AfDB to increase communities in Africa’s access.
The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) have pledged a combined $64 million to the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA).
SEFA, a multi-donor special fund, which the African Development Bank oversees, offers low-interest financing to encourage private sector investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, Norway’s Minister for International Development, highlighted SEFA’s continued efforts to address some of the most significant obstacles preventing access to renewable energy in Africa in her remarks regarding the award.
“Six hundred million Africans lack electricity connection, and 900 million do not have modern cooking stoves,” Tvinnereim said. “With today’s announcement, NORAD – SEFA’s partner since 2018 – increased its contribution to $54.72 million.”
Global Electricity Alliance for People and Planet’s executive director for Africa, Joseph Nganga, said GEAPP was pleased to collaborate with the AfDB to increase communities in Africa’s access to clean, affordable, and dependable energy.
“We are leapfrogging polluting energy sources and supporting decarbonisation across the energy sector. Together we will focus our efforts on sustainable energy projects with a high potential to be transformative, scalable and replicable. We look forward to supporting SEFA to catalyse and leverage additional financing for these pivotal projects,” he added.
