- Senegal expects two gas projects to reach final investment decisions this year.
- Phase 2 of the GTA gas project is expected to double gas production to 5m tonnes.
Phase 2 of Senegal‘s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project is expected to reach final investment decisions by September. The Yakaar-Teranga project will reach the same stage by year’s end. This is according to a senior Senegalese energy official. British company BP and America’s Kosmos Energy are leading the development of GTA and Yakaar-Teranga, Senegal’s first natural gas projects.
Mamadou Fall Kane, an advisor to President Macky Sall, told Reuters that the government is working to reach an FID by September for phase 2 (at GTA). This, he notes will double expected production from 2.5 million tonnes per annum to 5 million tonnes per annum.
Earlier in May, Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany wants to pursue gas and renewable projects alongside Senegal. This results from the need to diversify energy sources as Russia’s war in Ukraine intensifies.
