- Senegal strategises for gas development
- Petroleum and Energy Minister meets with AEC leadership
- To develop strategies for gas monetisation
Senegal’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Aissatou Sophie Gladima, has met with the leadership of the national oil company PETROSEN and the African Energy Chamber (AEC) to discuss the strategies for the gas sector development and monetisation.
Speaking at the meeting, the Executive Chairman AEC N. J. Ayuk said, ”Senegal has a history of fostering a balanced energy mix and promoting the energy sector, through the expansion of its electric grid and industrial park. The country’s leaders understand that in the context of the energy transition, Senegal and Western countries are in two different realities, and we must work together to find a balanced solution to reach common goals”.
In 2016, Senegal discovered over 450 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas and had gone on to receive foreign direct investments, including the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim development spearheaded by BP and Kosmos Energy. The development and monetisation of Senegal’s gas sector have become key to the post-COVID recovery program. The country is expected to see a 13.7% growth following the first gas production in 2023.
”The AEC will continue work to support Senegal in various initiatives to attract investment into the country and provide platforms like the African Energy Week, for Senegalese officials and local companies to be able to promote themselves”, Ayuk added.
The AEC will host the African energy leaders at the upcoming African Energy Week in Cape Town, South Africa, from 9th through 12th of November 2021.
