- Senegal plans to light its new stadium with solar power
- The stadium will be connected to a 2MW solar PV plant
The Senegalese Authority has announced that a solar PV plant will power the recently inaugurated Abdoulaye Wade Stadium. In line with the country’s energy plan, the 50,000-seat stadium will be connected to a 2MW solar photovoltaic power plant.
According to the local news report, solarisation of the stadium will reduce carbon dioxide emissions while serving as a trend for other industries looking to implement green technology into infrastructure and building design.
In addition to increasing regional and international sporting events held in the country, the stadium also aligns with Senegal’s national energy target of generating 50% of the country’s electricity from renewable resources by 2050. The move to solarise follows both the inauguration of the stadium on February 22, 2022 and the recent win by the Senegalese soccer team at the Africa Cup of Nations on February 6, 2022.
