- The IsDB has reallocated $16.64m for rural electrification in Senegal.
- The funds will finance the provision of clean off-grid energy solutions in the rural parts of the country.
The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Senegalese authorities have agreed to reallocate $75.2 million in financing to development projects. The reallocated funds will finance the provision of rural electricity and improve access to potable water in the capital Dakar. The government of Senegal obtained the funds as part of its efforts to curb the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. The IsDB approved $84.03 million in funding for an emergency food aid program expected to cover one million households in need.
About $16.64 million of the reallocated funds will go to the Senegal Rural Electrification Project currently being implemented by the Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER) and co-financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB). The project aims to improve access to electricity in remote localities via clean off-grid solutions. The remaining funds will finance the Dakar Water Supply Extension Project, which seeks to expand the city’s drinking water network to over 792km.
