- The power plant, when completed, will provide 250MW to augment the 400MW generated by the Dam.
- Total construction costs will be $480 million and will be funded by the Government of Ghana.
Senior Minister, Osafo Maafo, last week Friday inaugurated the first phase of the floating solar power plant constructed within the Bui Dam by the Bui Power Authority. The solar power plant, when completed, will contribute 250MW to the Dam’s annual electricity generation. According to the senior minister, the solar facility is proof of the government’s resolve to diversify Ghana’s energy mix and increase the contribution of renewable energy to power generation. He stated that the government is committed to increasing renewable energy’s contribution to Ghana’s energy production to 10 per cent by 2030.
Mr Osafo, also announced the recent passing of the Bui Power Authority Act, ACT 740 of 2007, amendment bill. He stated that the amended law would enable the BPA to perform more in the renewable energy space and deploy more renewable energy solutions across the country.
According to the BPA, the construction works for the second phase of the project is already underway. BPA is also leading the construction of impactful development projects to help stimulate the local economy and ensure economic development. Some of these projects include modern clubhouse, lodgings, downstream embankment improvement works, amenities for the clubhouse as well as other security installations at various stages of completion. The BPA board has also approved the development of seventeen business modules and skills set to help persons affected by the project seek alternative livelihoods. 169 affected persons have already benefited from the first phase of the programme.
The Biu Dam solar project created about 350 direct job opportunities for neighbouring community members.
