Seplat Energy Plc, a leading indigenous energy company in Nigeria, has taken a significant step to strengthen media professionalism by empowering twenty-five journalists in Imo State. The two-day capacity-building workshop held in Owerri brought together professionals from both print and electronic media. Participants enjoyed an intensive and hands-on learning experience designed to sharpen communication skills, writing techniques, and digital storytelling abilities. In addition, the programme reinforced Seplat Energy’s long-standing commitment to raising media standards nationwide.

In his opening remarks, delivered on behalf of the Director of External Affairs and Social Performance, Chioma Afe, the Manager of Corporate Communications, Stanley Opara, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to productive media partnerships. He stated that Seplat Energy recognises the crucial role journalists play in promoting transparency and national development. He also stressed the company’s commitment to supporting journalists as they navigate a rapidly changing digital landscape. According to him, excellence guides all Seplat Energy operations, and the media must embrace global best practices to drive national progress. He further noted that the organisation remains fully aligned with this mission.

Furthermore, the Base Manager of Eastern Assets, Mr Emmanuel Otokhine, encouraged participants to maximise the opportunities provided by the training. He advised them to remain adaptable and open to new career paths that rely on transferable skills. His message resonated strongly with the attendees, many of whom acknowledged the growing need for versatility in today’s media environment.

The workshop featured a variety of insightful sessions. For example, Dr Solomon Avbioroko led discussions on the psychology of communication and the value of self-awareness in journalism. Participants engaged in interactive exercises that enhanced their understanding of compelling storytelling and increased their productivity.

In addition, media specialist Mr Nnamdi Uwaemulem delivered practical modules on report writing and mobile video journalism (MOJO). He introduced participants to smartphone-based content creation, including framing, lighting, and mobile editing. His second session focused on media transformation, highlighting new digital opportunities in content creation and media entrepreneurship.

Another facilitator, Mr Abiola Adedeji, guided participants through a session on digital marketing and social media strategy. He demonstrated how data-driven storytelling and analytics can amplify the impact of journalism across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

Participants described the training as practical, engaging, and transformative. Many praised Seplat Energy for its continuous investment in human capital development. Ultimately, the initiative reinforces the company’s belief that informed and empowered journalists remain essential to national development and to strengthening public discourse.
