- Severe smog in Lahore causes schools and markets to shut down.
- Lahore, one of the world’s most polluted cities, experiences hazardous air quality.
Amid severe smog, authorities in Pakistan’s most populous province have taken decisive action. This includes shutting down schools and markets in cities like Lahore, now one of the world’s most polluted cities. Punjab’s Information Minister, Amir Mir, announced the closure of markets from November 9th to 12th, following advice from the health department.
The provincial government’s directive extends beyond market closures to temporarily closing schools, offices, restaurants, and most businesses. This excludes vital services like pharmacies, hospitals, and courts. These measures aim to limit residents’ outdoor activities to combat the hazardous air quality caused by the smog. Lahore experienced the world’s worst air quality on Wednesday, with a staggering air quality index of 432, as reported by the Swiss group IQAir.
The dense smog has not only reduced visibility but has also raised concerns among residents about the health risks associated with the worsening air quality. This situation underscores the urgent need for immediate action and stricter environmental regulations to address the hazardous smog and its impact on public health in Pakistan’s most populous province.
