Shell Begins Operations at 10MW Electrolyser in Germany

  • Shell has started operations of a 10MW electrolyser in Germany.
  • The electrolyser will produce 1,300 tonnes of green hydrogen yearly.

Anglo-dutch company Shell has commenced operations of “Europe’s largest polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen electrolyser “at its Rheinland refinery in Germany. The 10MW electrolyser, powered by clean energy, will produce about 1,300 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The green hydrogen will initially be used to produce lower-carbon fuels contributing to the decarbonisation of other industries. Over time, the capacity of the electrolyser will be increased to 100 MW.

The project was developed by a consortium including Shell, ITM Power Plc, SINTEF, Sphera and Element Energy. ITM manufactured the electrolyser in Sheffield, UK. The European Commission also supported the project through the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) fund.

Shell’s downstream director Huibert Vigeveno stated that “Shell wants to become a leading supplier of green hydrogen for industrial and transport customers in Germany.”  The company intends to be a player in all aspects of the value chain, from power generation, using offshore wind, to hydrogen production and distribution across sectors.
