The local unit in Brazil of oil and gas international company Shell Plc, Shell Energy Brasil, has revealed its intentions to construct solar parks of about 2.1 GW capacity in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil.
The European Company, under a newly-signed protocol of intent, will make an investment of BRL 7 billion into the development of five photovoltaic plants in the North, Northwest and Central regions of Minas Gerais.
In particular, Shell will conduct a study of installations in the cities of Corinto in the central region, Arinos and Brasilandia de Minas in the Northwest region, and Janauba and Varzea da Palma in the North of the state. If all that is planned for the projects are constructed, expectations are that the combined power output from the projects will meet the electricity demand of a town with more than 2 million inhabitants.
The project’s construction phase is planned to commence in January 2023, and the commissioning of the first plant is scheduled for January 2025.
Minas Gerais currently has 2.4 GW of solar capacity installed, according to the local solar association, Absolar.
