Sierra Leone Gets World Bank Funding

The World Bank has approved a $50 million facility to Sierra Leone from the International Development Association (IDA). The facility will help improve access to electricity and improve institutional capacity, commercial management of the sector. The Japan Policy and Human Resources Development Fund will co-finance the facility with $2.7 million.

The Enhancing Sierra Leone Energy Access project will improve energy access to homes, health facilities, businesses and schools. The project will deliver energy to at least 270,000 homes across the country. The World Bank Country Director for Sierra Leone, Gayle Martins said “This project will help address the country’s key infrastructure deficits, which is one of the most fundamental elements for promoting sustainable growth and job creation in the COVID-19 recovery”.

Only 23% of the country’s population has access to electricity. Poor electricity access has impacted negatively on the country’s economy.
