Sierra Leone’s Gold Mine Commits to Hybrid Solar Power Plant

  • Sierra Leone embraces sustainability with a hybrid solar power gold mine.
  • CrossBoundary Energy and FG Gold partner for clean energy supply.

Sierra Leone’s gold mining sector commits to sustainability with a hybrid solar power plant. Independent power Producer (IPP), CrossBoundary Energy (CBE), and FG Gold join forces.

Baomahun gold mine in Sierra Leone will receive clean energy via a 20-year PPA. CBE will construct a hybrid power plant in Freetown, integrating solar and thermal technologies.

Oliver Andrews, FG Gold’s Executive Chairman, emphasises an eco-friendly focus. The facility includes a 23.8 MWp solar park, 13.8 MWh storage, and a 21 MW thermal plant.

They expect 380,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions reduction over two decades – solar plants to meet 90% of the mine’s daytime electricity needs, marking Sierra Leone’s milestone. Baomahun mine, 200 km east of Freetown, is set to become the country’s largest gold mine by 2025.
