Algeria’s National Company for research, production, transport, processing and marketing of hydrocarbons (Sonatrach) plans to build a 10MWp solar PV plant in the Hassi Berkine basin. The power plant will supply the oil sites in the region. Sonatrach plans to finance the development of the power plants with its own funds. Sonatrach plans to equip its subsidiaries with solar PV systems. The company which is the world’s 12th largest oil group provides 30% of Algeria’s gross national product (GNP) employing over 80,000 people
Sonatrach believes that its plan to deploy solar power will enhance the country’s efforts at clean energy transition. Algeria has in recent years committed to exploring its estimated 2.6 million TWh per year solar potential.
