Sonnedix, a global renewable energy producer, has launched its 150 MW Betierra solar park in Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. This milestone pushes the company’s operational capacity in Spain beyond 1 GW. The Betierra project consists of three 50 MW solar plants.
Since starting commercial operations in September 2024, Betierra has generated nearly 300,000 MWh of clean energy annually. This output powers over 71,000 households each year. Additionally, the project cuts more than 107,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, contributing to environmental sustainability.
Sonnedix supplies the green electricity from Betierra under a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Equinix, a global data centre leader. They signed the agreement in May 2023, helping Equinix meet its goal of powering its Spanish data centres entirely with renewable energy.
The Betierra solar park reflects Sonnedix’s strategy to acquire, develop, and manage solar projects in the long term. Sonnedix acquired Betierra from RIC Energy during its development stage in 2021. This project forms part of a 300 MW portfolio, with 150 MW still in advanced development.
Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, called the inauguration a critical step in the company’s growth. “This project is essential in our journey to becoming a major solar player in Spain. We have expanded significantly from our first 1 MW solar plant 15 years ago.”
Gerson Gonzalez Hernandez, Sonnedix’s Representative Director in Spain, credited local and regional authorities for their support in developing Betierra. He emphasised optimising shared interconnection infrastructure and integrating the solar park with its natural environment.
Equinix recognises this partnership as central to its commitment to climate neutrality by 2030. “This agreement ensures that all our data centres in Spain run entirely on renewable energy,” said Eulalia Flo, Managing Director of Equinix Spain. “It also supports the decarbonisation of Spain’s power grid.”
Sonnedix continues to expand its renewable energy footprint in Spain, prioritising sustainable energy development. The Betierra project reinforces Sonnedix’s long-term commitment to clean energy and global carbon reduction efforts.
With Betierra now in operation, Sonnedix’s capacity in Spain surpasses 1 GW, solidifying its position as a leading solar energy producer. The company’s approach blends acquisitions, project development, and long-term management to support the global shift to renewable energy.
The successful launch of Betierra highlights Sonnedix’s dedication to scaling renewable energy production and aiding the decarbonisation of the energy sector. The partnership between Sonnedix and corporate entities like Equinix demonstrates how renewable energy producers can help businesses achieve sustainability goals. Through its efforts, Sonnedix plays a crucial role in Spain’s renewable energy transition, advancing the country’s climate goals.
