- The City of Cape Town cautions residents on fake electricity officials
- Urge residents to confirm the identity of officials before granting access to properties
The City of Cape Town has warned residents to be cautious of individuals posing as the City’s electricity officials. Officials also urged residents to check the official identification cards of all electricity workers before granting access to their homes.
“When the City needs to do checks on electricity meters, officials will make the necessary appointment with the resident. Municipal workers and contractors must carry a work order number specific to that dwelling and a City-issued identification card,” Mayoral Committee member for Energy and Climate Change, Beverley Van Reenen stated.
Reenen stated that the identity cards must display the logo of the City, name, and a photograph of the staff. “Residents are not to allow anyone onto their premises until they have verified these details. We urge residents to please be vigilant in these cases.” Reenen added.
Residents are also encouraged to call the City call centre to confirm the credibility of the electricity officials and report all suspicious-looking individuals to the relevant authority.
